What Are Your Favorite Holiday Movies?

We started watching Thanksgiving week....

Dec 6-Reality-Movies-Pauline Baird Jones

When I was a little girl, our holiday movie and TV show watching started Thanksgiving week. There was Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Miracle on 34Th Street, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original version), A Christmas Carol (seemed like there was a new version almost every year!), Charlie Brown Christmas (happy sigh), and of course Wizard of Oz.

I know, I’m not sure why the Wizard of Oz either, but it always showed the week before Thanksgiving. Our parents would shuffle us all to one house to watch. You haven’t lived until you’ve watched the Wizard of Oz with your older brothers. They knew the movie so well, they knew right when to give us younger kids a scare.

And those flying monkeys? Who thought this was a kid’s movie?

Of course, I realize now that the holiday season was a gift for my mom, who was trying to get ready for Christmas. She could plant us in front of the TV and get a lot done. Unlike now where you can stream the holiday all year if you want, we only got to see holiday movies around the actual holiday.

A lot of today’s classic holiday movies hadn’t happened when I was a kid.

I am that old.

So my favorites list has changed (and doesn’t include Wizard of Oz).

Here’s a short list:

White Christmas (I sometimes watch this more than once because SISTERS!)

The Santa Clause (the original is my favorite, though I liked the second one with the romance, but was less wild about what was going on the North Pole while Santa was courting)

Home Alone 3 (I like 1, too, but #3 is my favorite)

Miracle on 34th Street (original is my favorite)

The Bishop’s Wife (Cary Grant!)

A Christmas Story (You’ll put your eye out!)

The Christmas Chronicles (It’s a Netflix original and really fun!)

There are others that I’ll watch if they pop up on my TV and I’m a sucker for a holiday romance movie.

Do celebrate the holiday season with favorite movies?

Perilously yours,

Pauline
