Ever wondered what New Orleans might look like a few hundred years from now? Spoiler alert. It would still be delightfully chaotic. Only with shinier gadgets and the same stubborn hurricanes lining up for a party.
Back in 2014 I thought I was finished with Project Enterprise and needed a new direction. My brain tossed me a wild idea. What if Project Enterprise and The Big Uneasy collided? A mash up that felt like peanut butter and chocolate.
I knew a few things right away.
It had to be set in the future.
There needed to be one massive hurricane.
There would be descendants from both story worlds.
New Orleans had to feel futuristic.
I had no idea what that meant.
I talked it over with my son. He is my unofficial space battle consultant. He pointed out that New Orleans has always been a little messy. Past, present, and probably future. Why should it change? I had to admit he was right.
The city in my mind started to grow. When my husband and I lived in New Orleans, every hurricane season came with experts watching storms and fretting about the path up the Mississippi. It felt like a running joke. So I leaned into it. What if one finally did it?
Of course my future New Orleans is not sitting on the soggy ground anymore. So you might think the storm would not be a big deal. You might be wrong. I will let the books tell you how that turns out.
I put together the Unauthorized Guide to New Orleans so readers could get a fast and fun intro. A little history, a little mystery, and a peek at what is floating where. It is a freebie and it gives you the basics of this strange and stubborn city.
