When I began the adventure that became my Lonesome Lawmen series, I gave Matt a mom because everyone has a mom. Duh. I also gave him brothers, because sometimes people have siblings and he seemed like the kind of guy to have siblings.
I had such a great response to The Last Enemy, to both Matt and Dani and their story, that it seemed like a good idea to bring them back, even if it was as secondary characters in Byte Me. And of course, once I’d written Matt and Jake’s stories, I had to give Luke his happy ending. When I wrote “the end” to Missing You, I really thought it was the end.
I moved on, wrote other books, while sometimes thinking wistfully of my lonesome lawmen. Then I had a discussion with my then-publisher about putting the three books into a bundle, but I wanted to add something extra to readers for ponying up for all three books. I proposed writing a bonus short story. My publisher liked the idea and longtime widow, Debra Kirby, the guys’ mom, got her story, Lonesome Mama. A little adventure. And some romance. She even got a happy ending.
I love happy endings. 🙂
