Is That a Lizard or a Dragon?

Ever had a bad day?

I saw this photo in the hub’s Flickr stream and it made me think of my short story “The Real Dragon.” What do you say? Well, it does look like a lizard’s head and there is a bearded dragon in my short story. So…

And it has a shiny new cover.

This is one of the covers I debated with myself for a long time before replacing it, because I only sell it from my website and not with any of the vendors. The chances of it even coming close to paying for itself is super slim. Plus, it’s not really connected to any of my other storylines, though I did add bearded dragons to my Project Enterprise reboot (Found Girl), I haven’t connected this story into the wider series yet. (See how hopeful I am?)

I wrote “The Real Dragon” for the first Pets in Space anthology (and the pets will be back on Oct. 9th!). The Real Dragon is a bit quirky, written in the first person — which some readers like and some readers hate — and yeah, it doesn’t plug in neatly anywhere in my science fiction universe. (Note the emphasis on fiction? Let’s not forget that I make up ALL my stories. All of them. Lol)

Here’s the blurb for “The Real Dragon:”

Emma Standish didn’t think her day could get any worse. Her dad is marrying his boss, her dragon suddenly came back talking and typing, and it’s her fault the Earth, or at least ten square miles of Texas, is going to be destroyed. That’s what happens when you forget something very, very important. Luckily for her, she’s got the love of her life that she can’t remember and her dragon by her side. Who needs to worry when you’re having a day like this?

I think the new cover tells more about what goes on inside the story than the old one. Have you had days you didn’t think could get worse?

Perilously yours,

Pauline

P.S. If you go online, you’ll still see some older covers. I’m still working on the cover updates!
